Sunset Junction Streetscape and Transportation Vision

Los Angeles, California

As part of the Compass Blueprint Demonstration Project Program, Fregonese Associates worked with the City of Los Angeles to identify strategies for streetscape and transportation improvements for Sunset Junction, at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard. As the site of a former intercity streetcar line, the area continues to have a strong sense of place and some of the highest ridership on existing Bus Rapid Transit in the city. Area residents are increasingly interested in alternatives to driving, and the Sunset Junction redesign strategy aimed to meet high demand for transit options and safe bike and pedestrian access.

With the help of robust public involvement, FA identified several short-term and long-term strategies to transform the Sunset Junction area into a multi-modal transportation corridor with deliberate urban design to support a vibrant, walkable business core. These streetscape improvements present opportunities for increased connectivity; better integration of transit into the area; continued compact, walkable transit-oriented development; and focused growth in an existing center along an important major corridor.
