Alex Joyce, AICP
Urban Planner
Alex Joyce is an urban planner with strong skills in urban design and complex spatial mapping and analysis. Alex works with GIS, 3D modeling and graphic design software to bring planning ideas to life. His work helps clients visualize how their plans will look and feel on the ground. His products include fully rendered site plans, video fly-throughs and photomorphs.
His strong technical skills and knowledge of advanced computer software have made the critical difference during the rapid development of land use scenarios for several of the largest mega-regions in the country, including Southern California. Alex has been a project lead on developing the land use scenario modeling software called Envision Tomorrow. The software allows users to paint land uses onto the landscape and track the impact of these decisions in real-time across a range of indicators, from housing and employment density to carbon emission and water usage.
Alex has taken a lead role in the development of the Southern California Association of Government's land use and climate change planning efforts related to Senate Bill 375. In this role, Alex has lead the development of the sketch scenario planning tool used by SCAG and local jurisdictions, which allows planners to analyze the impact of land use decisions on overall greenhouse gas emissions and travel choice. Alex also served as the lead designer on the long-range plan for a model sustainable city in Superstition Vistas, a 175,000 acre parcel managed by the Arizona State Land Trust.
Alex earned his Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Florida State University.
